Who are the Ahl al-Ḥadīth?
Al-Shahrastānī said:
“The Aṣḥāb al-Ḥadīth [the adherents of ḥadīth] are the people of al-Ḥijāz; they are: the companions of Mālik ibn Anas, the companions of Muḥammad ibn Idrīs al-Shāfiʿī, the companions of Sufyān al-Thawrī, the companions of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and the companions of Dāwūd ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Aṣfahānī. They were called Aṣḥāb al-Ḥadīth because their concern was in collecting aḥādīth, transmitting reports, and basing rulings upon the texts; and they do not turn to qiyās jalī or khafī [explicit or implicit analogy] so long as they find a report or an athar.”

Siapakah Ahlul Hadis?
Asy-Syahrastani berkata:
“Ashabul Hadis (Ahli Hadis) adalah penduduk Hijaz; mereka adalah: para pengikut Malik bin Anas, pengikut Muhammad bin Idris asy-Syafi'i, pengikut Sufyan ats-Tsauri, pengikut Ahmad bin Hanbal, dan pengikut Dawud bin Ali bin Muhammad al-Asfahani. Mereka dinamakan Ashabul Hadis karena perhatian utama mereka adalah mengumpulkan hadis-hadis, meriwayatkan khabar (berita/riwayat), dan membangun hukum berdasarkan nash (teks dalil); dan mereka tidak beralih kepada qiyas jali (analogi yang jelas) maupun khafi (analogi yang samar) selama mereka masih menemukan khabar atau atsar.”
